The Background Associated With Candle Making is fascinating as the needs and use of candles has changed from generation to generation.

The art of making candle lights has been around since primitive times. Of course, as time passed candles turn out to be a lot different in design than they were back then. In the early days, candle lights had been essential for heat and light. These days they function as decorations, incredibly addding to the aroma and smells in our houses, and offer mild perfumes for romantic meals and baths.

The first known utilization of candle lights isn't completely known,but clay-based candle holders that date back to 4 BC have give us the data that they have been used for many years.

Candles had been also used in ancient times in both The far east and Japan. These candle lights had been made of polish obtained from insects and seed products. Candles are not recognized to have existed in the United States until 1 AD. When settlers found New England, they made candles from bayberries. Numerous contemporary candle manufacturers still use that procedure to make bayberry candle lights.

Tallow was the product used to make candle lights in the 1600s and 1700s. This is made from pet body fat. The process unfortumeately gave off a bad smell, especially when it had been burning up. Bees polish and paraffin polish each had been launched in the early 1800s, and tallow ceased being used.

In the 1800s, candle manufacturers knew the wick was the weakest part of the candle. A braided wick was developed in 1825 that seemed to greatlyto enhance the burning up of several types of candle lights. By 1830, a process was in being to make candles using paraffin and molds. These candles were of good quality and burned nicely.

These days, candle making is a common art form. There are many businesses who produce wonderful candles with some really unique scents. There are also smaller businesses that still make their candles at home within their kitchen . Making candles is a great pastime and fun activity for the entire family to engage in.

Candles are now used more for luxury and enjoymentthan to light or heat. The candle industry keeps growing with new kinds of candles becoming launched all the time. The quantity of colors, scents, and types of candles to select from is absolutely incredible.

They are described as:

This is a Superb Set of 4 Large Short (I know this doesn't make sense, but it does) Silver Candle Holders. They are of a short chunky circular shape with large spreading circular filled bases. They have a lined decoration to the top and base rims, each being covered on the underside with a green baize to avoid scratching surfaces. They are made from a good guage of silver and have clear hallmarks. They come complete in their Retailers cream hard cardboard lidded box, which has a burgundy material covering the little polysterene chips which form the padded base around the holders. The lid is stamped "Parkhouse & Wyatt". I am including the candles as photographed, so they are ready for use and would look impressive running down the centre of any table BIRMINGHAM 2000 The top diameter is 3 inches in diameter, the base 3.75 inches in diameter, and they are 2 inches tall. The actual candle size is 2 inches, so as you can see they take quite a large candle. The total weight is 956 (but the bases are weighted) They are all in lovely condition, and so to is the box inside and out. I cannot emphasise what an impressive modern set of 4 silver candles this is, that would look stunning on any dinner table or to create a soft ambiance in any room. Please do not forget that I am including the four brand new candles as shown in the photograph. If you could bear to part with them once you have seen them, they would make a super present Stock No. 5114

They have "V" shape bodies and large filled circular bases which have a stepped lined pattern to them and a green baize covering to the underside. The fixed sconces also have a raised lined band to the top rims and also this band is around the top of the bodies. They also have a knopped pattern to the base of the bodies. They both have clear hallmarks Silver Makers Marks: B & Co (WI Broadway & Co). They measure 8 inches tall, the bases being 4 inches in diameter. They a total of 542g but this includes the weighted bases. They are both in good conditon with just some light surface scratching around the edges of the bases, but this is minor and only to be expected on a metal item.

These candlesticks are of a corinthian column shape and have removable sconces. They are very decorative to the top with a pattern of embossed scroll leaves. They have a gadrooned pattern around the shaped square sconces and to the shoulders and rims of the square bases. They are made from a good guage of silver and are heavy (but the bases are weighted) and they have clear hallmarks and Silver Makers Marks: WH & SS Ld (William Hutton & Sons Ltd)

Measuring 5.5 inches tall, the actual candle holder is just over 0.75 inch and the bases are 3 inches square. They weigh 795g (but the bases are weighted)

Condition: There are a few little dings around the rims of the bases. On each of the edges of the stepped base, there is wear. This varies from slight thinning of the silver from polishing to an actual split at the seams (but this is only noticeable on very close inspection). One has a very slight wobble, but this is minor. They do display very well and are a practical useable pair of candlesticks and hence I have adjusted the price to reflect this wear (although as stated above this is not noticed unless you look very closely) A good pair of antique solid silver candlesticks that would look impressive in any home, and a nice pair of candlesticks to finish off any dinner table to create a romantic atmosphere as they are not too intrusive.

They have a wide "v" shaped body with a large circular base. They have a gadrooned pattern around the edge of the top rim and they have a pretty embossed border around the filled base rim.

They are stamped on the underside of the bases "Sterling" then a hand touching the circle surrounding the "D" in "Duchin Creation" and then "Weighted"

Measuring  3.75 inches tall, the base 3.5 inches in diameter and the candle hole is 0.75 inches in diameter. They weigh a total of 362g (but the bases are weighted)

Overall they are in good condition but there are a few very minor dings to the circular bases but these are minor and there is some scratching to the bases where the candles would sit

Remarks: A good pair of American sterling silver candlesticks that would look impressive in any home, and would finish off any dinner table without being intrusive.

They have "V" shaped bodies which have a lined decoration and fluted edges. They have oval shaped removable fluted sconces with an overhanging edge, so you could have them with these larger shaped sconces in place or a narrower option if they were removed. They have very pretty shaped oval bases which have a splayed lined decoration on them and a rounded fluted edge which has a lined decortion following the outline. They have clear hallmarks. The bases are not filled so the weight is all solid silver. The carry hallmarks for LONDON 1970/71 with Silver Makers Marks: A C & Ss Ld (A C & Sons Ltd)

Dimensions: 8.5 inches tall, the bases 4.25 inches long and 3.25 inches wide. The hole for the candle is just under 1 inch and they weigh a total of 423g

Condition: They are in very good condition

Remarks: This is a very good pair of solid silver candlesticks having an elegant shape that would look impressive in any home

They are "V" shaped  style with a fluted pattern around the sconces, the stems and the spreading square pedestal filled bases. The stepped square bases also have a small gadrooned border around the rims of the steps. They also ave a square pattern to the shoulders and then a smaller square shape at the base of the "V" shaped stem. They have clear hallmarks for BIRMINGHAM 1904/05 with Silver Makers Marks: WHSs Ltd (William Hutton U Sons Ltd)

They measure 7 inches tall, the bases are 3 inches square, the sconces 1.75 inches in diameter and the actual candle hole is 0.75 inch in diameter. They weigh a total of 809g (but the bases are filled)

They are in very good condition with just a few very minor dents around the plain steps of the base rims, but these are minor and commensurate with age and use

It is circular in shape and the base has been raised by hand and has a slight hammer finish pattern. It has a piped lined decoration around the rim of the base and also around the top of the removable sconce and the base of the central stem. It has a circular shape loop handle and a large cone shaped snuffer attached to a chain which also has the piped lined decoration around the circular base rim. In addition to the hallmarks it also has the extra Silver Jubilee mark. It is made from a good guage of silver and is very heavy and has clear hallmarks. Makers Marks: FW (Possibly Frank Wood)

Dimensions: It is 6.75 inches in diameter (7.5 inches wide including the handle) and 2.75 inches tall. The snuffer is 3.5 inches tall and the base is 2 inches in diameter. The sconce is 2.5 inches wide and the diameter of the hole for the candle is 1 inch. It weighs an impressive 458g (but this includes the silver coloured chain)

Condition: It is in very good condition

Remarks: This is a lovely large, heavy and impressive solid silver chamberstick complete with snuffer that would be useful in any home that would make a super display item for any sideboard, table etc.
